I watched a really cool documentary on my flight home from Hawaii. It was called Marshall and shared the story of how Truman Marshall fought for civil rights. Slavery sucks. Seriously, I can't believe any Christian nation could sanction the barbaric practice. Heck, I don't understand how any religious country could allow slavery in any form.
And here's the fascinating thing about slavery. It comes in all forms. Today we may not physically enslave others, but slavery still exists in other forms. If you aren't free to be who you want to be, then I say you are a slave. You are not free.
I know so many people who live their lives in a mental closet, afraid to say what they think or express their beliefs because they fear the consequences. They are afraid of being cut off from their family, friends, and "cult"ure. They choose to die a thousand deaths every day because they don't dare hurt their loved ones feelings or they don't dare pay the price for their aberration.
I'm all for people throwing off their shackles. I'm a fan of freeing yourself from the 'Traditions of Your Fathers" so soon as those traditions no longer serve you. I believe that every generation gets better than the former. It doesn't make sense to stay stuck in the past. I marvel at the progress we have made in so many ways. We once lived in a society that offered humans for sacrifice to their Gods. Then we lived in a society where they felt Negroes and other "coloreds" were inferior races. Women were slaves and only received the right to vote--and still in many nations are chattel. Children and animals are receiving more rights and protection. The environment is being better served and protected. The world is getting better and so are its people. I see goodness and enlightened consciousness abound. My heart thrills to think of where we will be in another 100 years. Progress is our watchword and here's to freedom all around!
p.s. I read this quote today and was reminded of how much I love it: I'd rather be loathed for what I am than loved for what I am not.
Furthermore, what matters more--behavior or beliefs? Speaking of slavery and rights, I think of Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream Speech wherein he stated that he looked forward to the day when his children would be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Well Reverend King, I too have a dream. I have a dream that one day people will be judged for their behavior and not their beliefs. We will not categorize individuals as "Christian" "Jewish," "Muslim," "Atheists," "Agnostics," "Hindus," "Taoists," "Jehovah Witnesses," "Catholics," etc. Instead, we will see each other as divine human beings, brothers and sisters, humanity. This, dear ones, is my dream!
